Against a Wall

Posted on Monday, June 1, 2009 in Uncategorized

Most writers face some difficulty writing every now and again. We call this awful feeling “writer’s block.” The best way to break through the feeling of writer’s block is to keep writing–even if what is written is of poor quality (that’s what editing is for). Writing prompts are also a good way to get the creativity going–it may not help the work in progress, but at least it gets some writing accomplished and keeps the brain moving.

We can translate writer’s block as 作家的思路中断。 (zuòjiā de sī lù zhōng duàn). Using this, writers can explain to their friends why they are out doing something other than sitting at home and writing.

我应该写我的小说但是我没有思路。(wǒ yìnggāi xiě wǒde xiǎoshuō dànshì wǒ méiyǒu sīlù) I should write my novel but I have writer’s block.

  1. I’m enjoying TCTW very much. There’s a real wealth of good writing here. Re the big block: Athletes get injured; children fall down. All writers get blocked; they write their way out of it. I’ve found that one method to get to that point is to read some bad newspaper stories. If reading that stuff and contemplating the million nose-pickers reading it doesn’t get you jumping mad and reaching for a pen and a notebook…
